Green Smoothies are a wonderful beverage to add into your diet as you ease into the Alkaline Lifestyle. They are full of fiber, nutrient-rich, and low in fat. It is important to be mindful about what you put into these power-packed drinks so you don’t sabotage your efforts to alkalize the body and lose weight.
Tip #1: Keep the ingredients simple. Think ionized alkaline mineral water, fresh fruit, and fresh veggies. You can add chia seeds and oranges if you want extra calcium. If you want to add in some healthy fats such as avocado, flax seeds, chia seeds, or coconut oil be sure to go easy on the portions. I suggest a tablespoon or less. Think, less is more!
Tip #2: Let the fruit be your sweetener. Adding in more sugars such as honey or agave will transform your beautiful smoothie into a sugar nightmare. The more your body develops a taste for the greens, you will notice that you don’t even need as much fruit. Adding other sugars will interfere with your weight loss.
Tip #3: Use fresh fruits and vegetables. Avoid canned or packaged foods. Store-bought juices and nut milks tend to be filled with extra sugars and preservatives. You can make your own nut milks very easily if you want them in your smoothie or just simply stick to ionized alkaline mineral water for optimal health benefits. A good ratio of fruits to greens is: 2 cups of fruit to 3-4 cups of greens and 1- 1 ½ cups of ionized alkaline mineral water.
